A lot of people will often overlook certain signs or situations that are indicating that their door locks need changing, some may think its not important and often put it off as long as they can. With this said there are so many reasons why it is important to get your locks changed and it is not always necessary for the lock to be faulty to get it changed. Our Team at Delta Forge Locksmiths have put together this helpful guide on some of the most common reasons why you may need to change the locks at your property old or new!

Lost Keys – Lost keys are something us locksmiths deal with on a daily basis. When people lose their keys all they are thinking about is getting back into their property. However, it is also important to consider getting the locks changed. This will help ensure the security of your home as your keys could have been found or even taken by someone intending to use them to break-in!

Previous occupants – If you have just moved house or been in your house a while but never had the locks changed then you should seriously consider getting them done. You can never be sure that all keys from previous occupants have been handed back and passed on to you. So, changing the locks when you move home is always advised by insurers, the police and locksmiths to prevent previous occupants letting themselves into your home whenever they feel like it and keep your home safe and secure.

Attempted Break-In/Break-In – Your locks will definitely need changing after a break-in. Firstly, locks may have been damaged during the break-in leaving them vulnerable or completely broken. If a break-in was attempted or even successful it is a sure sign that your locks need an upgrade as burglars felt it was an easy target. Also, in the event of a break-in, a burglar could have found a spare set of keys to your property and saved them to use later. It’s better to be safe than sorry and get the locks changed after a break-in or attempted break-in even if there was no damage to the locks.

Old Locks – Old locks are prone to problems due to wear and tear. They can become, stiff and difficult to use and then eventually break. The first sign of a problem with your lock you should call out your local locksmith to come and either repair or replace the lock for you before much more serious problems arise that could leave you locked out or even in your property. Also, old locks may not be the most secure locks, burglars are constantly changing and improving their methods of bypassing locks and with it the security industry is constantly coming up with new and innovative locks to help combat this. All locks installed at your property should meet or exceed the current British Standard of security, BS3621 or TS007 anti snap locks for uPVC doors. If your locks are substandard, you should contact your local locksmith to come and upgrade them.
