Frequently Asked Questions

At Delta Forge Locksmiths I would always advise that you contact a locksmith to change your locks unless you have the relevant knowledge and qualifications to change the specific door lock or window lock within your home or commercial property as you may cause more damage which will then mean further expense when coming to repair the lock.

By law a license to be a locksmith is not required however this is likely to change in the near future due to issues throughout the industry with rogue trading locksmiths. I would always suggest before hiring the services of a locksmith you consider the reviews of the company online such as Google Map reviews, Trustpilot etc. I would also advise that you check to see if the locksmith has passed relevant tests and has certifications of their skills such as City and Guilds, NCFE or MLA.

The cost of a local locksmith is determined by three main factors, these are: The cost of any required parts, the time required to complete the work and the time of day/night in which the service is needed. For example a local 24hr locksmith will cost more after 5pm.
Finding a trustworthy locksmith, like any reputable tradesperson can be challenging however, as experienced locksmiths, I hope that with guidance you’ll be able to find the right locksmith for the job.

The first and most important sign of a trustworthy locksmith is to check if they have any reviews or customer testimonials on third party web sites/platforms such as Google maps, Facebook, Bizify or Trustpilot (There’s plenty available). It’s important not to make a buying decision solely based upon what it says on website. Reviews will enable you as a customer to gain an insight into the level of customer service and workmanship to expect from the locksmith.

Is the locksmith accredited? You may think does this really matter. However, I believe that trustworthy locksmith will also be a an accredited locksmith. Accreditation is the formal acknowledgement of a locksmiths training, knowledge and skill. Accreditation is awarded by a recognised training body such as City&Guilds, NCFE or the MLA (master locksmith association). Due to the locksmith industry being un-regulated, there are no restrictions to prevent anyone from calling themselves a locksmith, in turn creating opportunity for rouge traders. Therefore it is my opinion that a conscientious and trustworthy locksmith will obtain a form of accreditation in order to assure prospective customers.

Another sign of a trustworthy locksmith is to see if they regularly post photos of their completed works on their social media profiles. In this digital age nearly every business uses social media to promote their services/products to prospective customers, whilst taking pride in their work. This is no different for a locksmith.

Lastly, a great way to source a trustworthy locksmith is to speak with friends and family and ask them if they’ve recently used a locksmith and where they satisfied with the work carried out.
When contacting a locksmith it’s important to know you are hiring a reputable and trusted professional. It’s understandable that in a moment of desperation/panic (I.E You’re accidentally locked out) that the first instinct will be to do a quick search on a mobile device and contact the first locksmith you find. We advise that you take a breath and first do some very quick & basic research about the company before agreeing to a call out. Firstly see if the company has any recent reviews from the local area on a trusted review platform  such as Google maps, Trustpilot or Bizify? Does the company hold any professional training accreditation such as City&Guilds or Master locksmith association? When contacting the company do they talk through the issue prior to attending and provide an estimate of cost upfront? and finally it’s important to ask what methods of payment they accept (Bank transfer, card or cash?) Taking a moment to check these four basic principles may help you avoid a potential rogue trader and save you from an unnecessarily hefty invoice. As a reputable, independent locksmith serving the local communities of Waterlooville, Havant and surrounding areas I pride myself on my integrity, dedication and skills in order to ensure my customers feel they receive fair value from my services.

A locksmith is a specialist tradesperson who is capable of opening many varieties of locks in addition to carrying out repairs of the intricate mechanisms within them. A locksmith will also be proficient in installing locks and additional security hardware in order to secure a customers property. In addition to this a locksmith will be able to cut keys. Some locksmith such as myself here at Delta Forge Locksmiths will also be able to carry out additional services such as window/door glass replacement, UPVC repairs and boarding up services.

The cost of a local locksmith is determined by three main factors these are: The cost of any required parts, the time required to complete the work and the time of day/night in which the service is needed. For example a local 24hr locksmith will cost more after 5pm however, as a trusted local 24hr locksmith myself, I will provide customers with an upfront estimate of cost based upon a best and worst case scenario via a quick fault finding assessment over the phone, prior to attending.

In short “yes a locksmith can open a safe”. Mat at Delta Forge Locksmiths has previously opened domestic level safes for some of my customers due to either the batteries degrading, the lock failing or due to the keys being lost. To open a safe requires varying levels of specialist expertise depending on the Eurograde rating of the safe to be opened. For instance most safes commonly stocked in hardware stores, will be un-graded or 0 graded. These are mainly designed for storing documents and small quantities of cash/valuables (Please refer to your safes manufacture for specific value guidelines) Many of these are operated/locked using a digital keypad and are often supported with the use of tubular lock, used to override the safes lock, should the batteries within the keypad fail. These can normally be opened/bypassed by a skilled locksmith using non dedicated tools. Larger heavy duty safes for example such as the Eurograde 7 rated, Eurovault atlas produced by Burton Safes is designed to hold up to a value of £2,500.00 of valuables and employs a much more complex locking mechanism in addition to a hardened construction, in order to deter even the most persistent of criminals from opening them. With this understanding, I would refer the opening of such larger safes to a specialist safe engineer who employs the use of dedicated safe tools.

Some locksmith may charge a call out fee for attending a customers home/premises. This is normally to cover reasonable travel costs and the time required to evaluate the required work. Mat at Delta Forge Locksmiths does not charge a call out fee. As a local, independent locksmith, I hope that by making this decision, it will inspire trust and confidence from my customers from the moment I speak with them. Due to my experience as a locksmith, I find that asking the right questions during the initial enquiry can often help understand the needs of customers and in many cases enable me to evaluate the prospective cost involved prior to attending.

A controversial question. To best answer it, you must also ask is the lock is integral to your homes security? If the broken lock is fitted to an externally accessible door/window or outbuilding and prevents people from entering your home/property, it would be reasonable to classify the broken lock as an emergency and I would advise contacting a reputable locksmith as soon as possible.

At Delta Forge Locksmiths, I take the safety and security of four customers very seriously. Which is why I operate as a 24hr locksmith service.
Depending on the situation you may have a couple of potential options available. If you find yourself accidentally locked out, you may be able to contact a familiar member or trusted friend who may have a spare key. If this option isn’t viable then I would recommend contacting a local, trusted locksmith for assistance. A competent locksmith should possess the ability to unlock a door or window. Locksmith utilise two core methods of gaining entry.

The first should always be a non-destructive method, in which the locksmith will attempt to bypass the door lock through manipulation or by picking the lock open. Should this be unsuccessful and with the customers permission a locksmith will then  proceed to the next method, known as destructive entry.

Now first it’s important to clarify that although the name of this method states the word “destructive” within its name, it does not mean that a locksmith will start ramming your door like a medieval siege. The destructive entry method is in fact a precision method of attacking and destroying specific components within the locks mechanism in order to open it. This method however will require the replacement of the lock, once entry has been achieved.

Yes, a locksmith should be able to open a locked door. Due to the various types of locks available within the UK market. A locksmith should be well versed with the various methods  and tools utilised to achieve the opening of a locked door.

Typically we would say it is reasonable to allow up to 45 minutes from making an enquiry to an locksmith arriving at your property. It’s important to take into consideration reasonable obstructions such as rush hour traffic and road closures. A conscientious locksmith will be sure to keep a customer updated of any potential delays whilst on route to your property. If you require non-emergency work carried out, most locksmith’s will operate a diary booking system, allowing you to make an appointment for a date and time convenient for you.

Changing locks is a very common practice for a locksmith. The time required to change a lock is determined by the locksmiths level of knowledge of the various different types of lock available within the UK and European markets.

For example, changing a cylinder lock within a UPVC door may only take 15 minutes or so to complete, whereas changing a deadlock or sashlock within a timber door could take up to an hour to complete. This is due to the potential requirement to carefully alter the mortice within the door (the pocket in which the lock is housed).
